Course Description
The workshop will provide an introduction to the
social security disability application process and address
special considerations in interacting with individuals
with disabilities. Discussion will also include
landlord/tenant, family, discrimination, accessibility,
criminal and consumer issues, with opportunities for
questions and answers.
Faculty Bio
Elizabeth M. Livingstone, JDD is the Senior Staff
Attorney for the Community Health Law Project in New
Jersey. She has represented disabled individuals in all
areas of civil litigation and advocacy.

Course Description
This seminar will
review the problems and issues associated with trauma and
addictions, including treatment options and suggested goals
of treatment. We will utilize case presentation and
interactive discussions of a variety of patient profiles and
apply them to several evidenced-based therapeutic
techniques.
This seminar will
review the relationships between trauma, stress and
addictions from psychological and neurobiological
perspectives. We will further discuss emerging
mindfulness-based treatments for stress, addictions and
related mental illnesses, including their core elements and
evidence for their effectiveness, as well as recent research
on post-traumatic growth.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion
of this seminar, participants will be able to:

Describe addiction in the context of emotional
dysregulation stemming from trauma and oppression.

Describe how addiction serves as a diversion from a
primary emotional experience, thereby keeping individuals
from processing the trauma.
-
Describe how to overcome trauma by coming to terms with
the trauma, using examples of mindfulness and
emotion-focused therapy.
-
Identify the elements of various therapeutic techniques
including mindfulness, emotion-focused therapy, and
narrative therapy.
-
Apply uses and application of therapy techniques with case
examples of rape, molestation and death of a parent.
-
Describe the basic biology and psychology of stress.
-
Describe how stress affects reward systems of the brain
and alters processing of thoughts, emotions, motivation
and behavior.
-
Describe the development, format and basis of
mindfulness-based treatments.
-
Interpret the results of various clinical and experimental
studies of mindfulness-based treatments.
-
Identify the basic elements of post-traumatic growth and
explain the conditions under which this can occur.
Instructors
Dr. Sara
Martino is a graduate from the counseling Psychology
program at Temple University. Her research interests include
women's issues such as self-mutilation, early maturation,
perceptions of visual piercings and feminist identity
development. She is a licensed professional counselor and
has performed work as a independent therapist as well as a
therapist in a hospital setting. Her clinical focus is on
women and family therapy. She recently published a therapy
book for coping with self-mutilation entitled, Scars:
Creative Approaches for Understanding and Coping with
Self-Mutilation.
Dr. Marcello
Spinella received his PhD from the City University of
New York Graduate Center. He trained in clinical
neuropsychology and has worked with various psychiatric,
neurological and addiction populations. In 2001, he
published The Psychopharmacology of Herbal Medicines: Plant
Drugs That Alter Mind, Brain and Behavior with the MIT Press
and is currently working on books on the neuroscience of
mediation and applying positive psychology strategies to
addiction recovery. He teaches mindfulness mediation in the
local communities.

psychological diagnoses with which clients present and the
pharmaceutical agents utilized for treating these

| FACULTY PROFILE |
Albert Rundio Jr., PhD, DPN, RN, APRN, NEA-BC, LCADC,
DPNAP is a former Associate Professor of Nursing at
the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. He also
practices part-time as a nurse practitioner in a chemical
dependency treatment center in southern New Jersey. Dr.
Rundio holds a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. He
holds a Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration from La
Salle University and a Post Master’s Certificate as an acute
care and adult primary care nurse practitioner from Drexel
University, College of Nursing and Health Professions.
Dr. Rundio is certified by the American Nurses
Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a Clinical Nurse Specialist
in Medical-Surgical Nursing; an Acute Care Nurse
Practitioner, an Adult Primary Care Nurse Practitioner and
as a Certified Nurse Administrator, Advanced. He also is a
Certified Addictions Registered Nurse – Advanced Practice by
the International Society of Nurses in Addictions. Dr.
Rundio also holds licenses as a New Jersey Clinical Alcohol
and Drug Counselor (LCADC), a Nursing Home Administrator,
and as an Assisted Living Facility Administrator in New
Jersey.
An experienced clinician and administrator, Dr. Rundio is
the former Vice President of Nursing at Shore Memorial
Hospital, Somers Point, New Jersey. He was awarded the
Governor’s Nursing Merit Award for Advanced Practice Nursing
in New Jersey in 1999 by Governor Christine Todd Whitman,
former governor of New Jersey and was inducted into the
National Academies of Practice in 1999.
Dr. Rundio is currently serving on the Editorial Board of
the Merck Manual and Merck Manual, Home Edition.

This two-part seminar describes mood and anxiety disorders and the impact that they can have on a person's day-to-day life.
The seminar will outline risk factors, warning signs, and best practices for the treatment of anxiety and mood disorders in adults, with particular emphasis on evidence -based psychosocial treatments,
including cognitive behavior therapy. It also provides participants with practical strategies that can be used to assist people who are struggling with mood disorders, in addition to appropriate referral paths. |

- Describe the epidemiology of anxiety and mood disorders in adults.
- Describe the research on risks and resiliency factors for anxiety and mood disorders.
- Differentiate among the anxiety and mood disorders as described in the DSM IV-TR.
- Outline and explain the major approaches to assessment of anxiety and mood disorders in adults, including assessment tools and self-report measures.
- Identify empirically-supported psychological interventions for anxiety and mood disorders, including skills for implementation.

Christine V. Ferri, Phd, is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey where she specializes in clinical psychology, cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, positive psychology, geropsychology, and statistical methods. Dr. Ferri earned her MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology from Duke University and is licensed as a Clinical Psychologist in NJ. |

This two-part seminar addresses the dynamics of both domestic violence and sexual abuse, how they are often interwoven, and how they affect the larger family functioning. Topics include the psychodynamics of the battering cycle, including why victims so frequently return and play a role in maintaining the cycle. The seminar will also cover effective counseling strategies, crisis intervention do's and don't's, and how to effectively work with community agencies whose mission includes assisting in dealing with cases of violence and abuse. |
| LEARNING OBJECTIVES |
As a result of successful completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:
- Describe how to recognize, respond to, and help prevent domestic violence and sexual assault against individuals.
- Describe various forms of abuse, identify “red flags” and identify what constitutes abusive intimate relationships.
- Describe phases I, II and III of the recurring nature of an abusive relationship; describing how someone can become trapped in a potentially never ending life of violence.
- Describe various effective counseling skills and techniques that would help them better assist and support victims of abuse.
- Outline strategies for accessing available services, including appropriate legal services, and describe the need for additional local community groups and professionals to address issues of violence and abuse

Martina Bumpus -Singleton is an abuse survivor turned advocate, counselor, and presenter. She began working at the Coalition Against Rape and Abuse (C.A.R.A.) in 1996, where she serves as the Direct Services Prevention Coordinator and Counselor. Martina’s combination of education, background experience and trainings has given her a steady flow of additional knowledge to make it possible to assist victims and survivors of abuse.
Martina has spoken in public schools, colleges, correctional facilities, civic groups, and conferences. She has dedicated her life to sharing her story of her survival in order to encourage others to believe in themselves, and when she speaks to a group, participants experience a unique blend of life experiences coupled with a solid base of knowledge.

Sondra J. Dublinsky, M.A., SAC, graduated Magna cum Laude from Upsala College in 1976 with a degree in Elementary Education and Spanish. She received her Masters Degree in Counseling with honors from Rowan University in 1995. In addition, she received NJ certification as a Substance Awareness Coordinator through Georgian Court University. She has over twenty five years experience working with adults and adolescents in the field of education, mental health and addiction. Presently, she is the Coordinator/ Addictions Therapist at the Child and Adolescent Unit of AtlantiCare Behavioral Health, Senior Adjunct Professor at Atlantic Cape Community College, and Instructor in the Richard Stockton College Continuing Studies Addictions Professionals Training program. |

This two-part professional education seminar is designed to provide human service professionals with an overview of key treatment issues of consumers who have co-occurring disorders of persistent mental illness and chronic substance abuse. A particular focus will be on treatment for consumers who use and/or abuse either prescribed or over-the-counter pain medications |
| LEARNING OBJECTIVES |
- To understand key concepts in the relationship between co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse
- To differentiate between substance abuse and substance dependence
- To analyze the similarities and differences between an “abstinence” model and a “harm reduction” model of treatment
- To outline the differences between “wanting” and “needing” pain medication
- To identify commonly used pain medications including potential side-effects and contraindications for use with psychotropic medication
- To outline basic pain management strategies for consumers with substance issues
- To identify signs of opiate mismanagement, abuse and dependence
- To become familiar with treatment options for consumers who abuse opiates
- To describe common family issues associated with having a family member with co-occurring disorders
